Homemade southern style cornbread is without question my husbands favorite side with soup or stews. It is a balance of a crisp outer layer, and a moist interior. The key is using a cast iron skillet to allow the crust to develop.

The richness of southern style cornbread comes from using buttermilk.

Whether served on the side or submerged into a soup, it is a simple and timeless recipe. And let’s not forget this is the star of cornbread dressing which is always a must for our family at the holidays.

What makes this the BEST southern cornbread recipe?

It does not contain sugar! Real cornbread does not include sugar; at least not in the South. While we all tend to love things with a little sweetness, I always try to lean to the healthier option.

Now if you like sugar, you could add about half a cup to this recipe if you would like.

You can also use cooking fat instead of butter. And milk instead of buttermilk. While I do not love buttermilk in a glass, I feel it is a MUST in a cornbread recipe.

What to cook cornbread in?

While you can cook it in a casserole dish, I strongly recommend breaking out the cast iron skillet.?It is what gives the cornbread the best crust and golden edges.?And cast iron will give the cornbread itself more flavor!

What is cornmeal?

Cornmeal is a coarse flour made from dry corn.?It can be found in the making isle of your grocery store.?While there are many types and brands of cornmeal, I prefer Martha White Self-Rising Cornmeal Mix.

What to put on cornbread?

  • Butter
  • Honey
  • Honey Butter
  • Jam

What to have with cornbread?

We love it with chili, vegetable soup, and stew! I prefer it on the side with butter. But my husband loves to mash it into the liquid of a soup of chili! He would not have it any other way.

Here is my VEGETABLE BEEF SOUP RECIPE!?It may be an even better pairing than chili in my opinion.
