THIS POST IS ALL ABOUT NON-TOXIC SUNSCREENS

Non Toxic Sunscreen

Why Use Non-Toxic Sunscreen

Switching to non-toxic sunscreen isn’t just a trend; it’s a crucial step toward safeguarding our health and the health of our planet. Conventional sunscreens often contain a cocktail of chemicals, including oxybenzone, octinoxate, and homosalate, linked to hormone disruption, skin irritation, and even coral reef destruction.

Opting for non-toxic alternatives can minimize exposure to these harmful substances, reducing the risk of adverse health effects for ourselves and future generations. Many non-toxic sunscreens are made with natural, plant-based ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, providing adequate protection against UV rays without potentially harmful chemicals.

Our skin is our body’s largest organ, and what we put on it matters. Non-toxic sunscreens shield us from harmful UV radiation and nourish and protect our skin with ingredients that promote overall skin health. Many non-toxic formulations contain antioxidants, vitamins, and moisturizing agents that help combat free radicals, soothe irritation, and keep our skin looking and feeling its best.

By prioritizing non-toxic sunscreen, we protect ourselves from sun damage and support our skin’s natural resilience and vitality, contributing to our overall well-being.

Differences In Sunscreen

It is pretty simple. There are two categories to describe sunscreens easily. Physical and Chemical.

Chemical sunscreens contain chemicals that penetrate the skin to protect against UV rays and sunburn. Physical (mineral) sunscreen is made with natural ingredients and sits on the skin, causing the rays to bounce off rather than soak in. I like the sound of that!

Mineral sunscreens are the better choice as they are physical blockers. Chemical sunscreens get into the skin and possibly into our bloodstream. Are they protecting the sun? Yes! But they are causing additional damage.

Ingredients To Avoid In Sunscreen

Here’s a breakdown of some common ingredients found in sunscreen and why they’re considered harmful:

  1. Octinoxate (Octylmethoxycinnamate) absorbs UVB rays, but it’s known to mess with hormones, particularly thyroid hormones. It’s been found in human urine, blood, and breast milk.
  2. Avobenzone absorbs UVA rays, but it can be unstable when exposed to sunlight, causing skin irritation or allergies for some people.
  3. Octocrylene is a chemical UV filter that absorbs UVB and some UVA rays. However, it’s worrisome because exposure to UV light can produce free radicals, damaging the skin.
  4. Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3) is linked to hormone disruption and skin allergies. It’s also bad for coral reefs, causing bleaching and coral death.
  5. Fragrance is added to make sunscreen smell good, but it can irritate the skin, especially for sensitive skin. The exact ingredients are often kept secret, making it hard for people to know what they’re allergic to.

To stay safe, it’s best to avoid sunscreens with these ingredients. Instead, look for ones with mineral-based UV filters like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They offer good sun protection without the risks associated with chemical UV filters.

Non-Toxic Sunscreen Brands

What To Consider When Buying Sunscreen

Be sure to avoid greenwashing by products claiming to be organic. Unless you read the actual ingredients, the product may contain dangerous ingredients. That is why I compiled a list of my favorite non-toxic sunscreen brands.

Look for mineral sunscreens rather than chemical sunscreens, as they tend to be loaded with synthetic ingredients that can harm hormones and overall health.

Finding a “reef-safe” sunscreen is also a bonus, as it is free from chemicals that tend to cause skin irritations, allergies, and environmental damage.

Let’s Talk SPF

SPF, which stands for Sun Protection Factors, indicates the amount of protection against the sun’s rays. Dermatologists recommend using at least sunscreen with an SPF of 30 and that anything over 50 is unnecessary. But why exactly, and what should you choose?

There are two types of rays we get from the sun. UVB and UVA.

UVA rays are responsible for aging the skin and are linked to the development of wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. They can penetrate the skin more deeply, reaching the dermis, where they can cause long-term damage such as collagen breakdown and DNA damage. UVA rays are present throughout the day and can penetrate through clouds and glass.

UVB rays primarily affect the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and are the primary cause of sunburn. They are more intense during midday and in the summer months. UVB rays are also responsible for producing vitamin D in the skin, but excessive exposure can lead to sunburn, skin damage, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

Both UVA and UVB rays can contribute to the development of skin cancer.

Protecting against both types of radiation is essential for maintaining healthy skin and reducing the risk of sun-related damage and skin cancer.

Quick Tips For A Safe Day In The Sun

  • Use mineral sunscreen. These are the common substitutes as active ingredients in sunscreens to the chemicals of known concern listed above.
  • Cover up and find shade. We suggest using clothing and hats as sun protection. This can be an excellent way to protect your skin from damaging sun rays.
  • Avoid the strongest sun. Go outside early in the morning and the afternoon when the sun is not at its strongest to avoid the most intense sun exposure.
  • Skip the sprays. Some chemicals, like titanium oxide, which are safer in lotion form, can be dangerous when inhaled.

Non-Toxic Sunscreens For Babies

Protecting your baby’s delicate skin from the sun’s harmful rays is crucial for their health and well-being. Sunscreen plays a vital role in shielding infants from the risk of sunburn, skin damage, and long-term health issues such as skin cancer. Babies’ skin is highly sensitive and more susceptible to sunburn than adults’ due to its thinner outer layer and reduced melanin production. So applying sunscreen regularly is essential, especially outdoors or during peak sun exposure hours.

Choosing the right sunscreen for your baby is paramount to ensure maximum protection without exposing them to potentially harmful chemicals. Opting for mineral-based sunscreens containing ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide is recommended, as these provide broad-spectrum protection while being gentle on sensitive skin.

Look for sunscreens that are often fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and dermatologist-tested for babies and toddlers. To maintain its effectiveness, use sunscreen generously and reapply it every two hours or after swimming or sweating. By prioritizing sunscreen use for your baby, you can safeguard their skin health and instill lifelong sun protection habits.
