Non-toxic skincare brands are popping up all over. People of all generations are taking what we put on our skin more seriously. This blog post will explore 9 of my favorite non-toxic skincare brands.

I am not affiliated with or sponsored by any of the mentioned brands. I purchase these products with my own money and share my experience with them because I find them compelling and love using them.

In 2019, I received a diagnosis of a chronic illness, which prompted me to start transitioning to a non-toxic lifestyle. I understand this can be challenging, and I want to help you in any way possible to make your journey smoother.

This blog post is your guide to non-toxic skincare brands to trust in 2024!

What To Look For In Your Skin Care Products

Avoiding the ingredients below is so essential for your skin and overall health. Some people may be more sensitive to some more than others.

  • Parabens: mimic estrogen in the body and have been associated with hormonal disruptions.
  • Phthalates: Found in fragrances, phthalates are known endocrine disruptors and may interfere with hormone regulation, potentially causing reproductive and developmental issues.
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): These surfactants are used for their foaming properties, but they can be harsh and irritating to the skin.
  • Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-releasing Preservatives: These are used as preservatives in some skincare products. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen and can also cause skin irritation.
  • Triclosan: Often used in antibacterial products, triclosan may disrupt thyroid function and has been linked to environmental concerns. The FDA has banned the use of triclosan in over-the-counter hand sanitizers and soaps.
  • Mineral Oil and Petrolatum: These ingredients may clog pores and create a barrier on the skin, potentially leading to acne and other skin issues.
  • Oxybenzone: Oxybenzone has been associated with hormone disruption.
  • Talc: Talc, when not properly processed, may contain asbestos, a known carcinogen. Talc has been linked to ovarian cancer when used in the genital area.
  • Synthetic Fragrances: Fragrances often contain a mix of undisclosed chemicals. Some of these chemicals may be irritants or allergens, and they can also contribute to air pollution.
  • Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): PEG compounds can be contaminated with harmful substances, and high levels of exposure may lead to kidney and liver issues.

Shopping Tips When Looking For Non-Toxic Skincare Products

When selecting non-toxic skincare products, choose those from cruelty-free brands and hold third-party certifications such as USDA Certified Organic, Leaping Bunny Certified, EWG verified, COSMOS, NPE certification, Vegan Certification, and Non-GMO Verified.

You can find out more about a brand’s certifications on their websites. Any brand carrying these certifications will be proud to show them, so they should be easy to find.

Additionally, always read labels and look for the ingredients listed. Remember to reference the highlighted box above for the ingredients you want to avoid.

How To Transition To Using Non-Toxic Skincare

Transitioning to non-toxic skincare can be fun once you educate yourself on what to look for. And this process does not have to happen overnight.

When I began my journey, I just started replacing items as I ran out. As with any new product you use on your skin, you should always do a small patch test. What works for one person may work better for someone else. Even though these products are clean, that does not mean someone may not be sensitive to an ingredient.

I also suggest starting with one brand for the face and one for the body. This way, if you have a reaction to something, it will be easier to determine which product may have caused it.
