Creating a non-toxic kitchen environment can have a very positive impact to your overall health.Reducing toxins in the home has become a priority for me since 2018. The kitchen is a great place to start.

From cookware to food storage, this post will take you through some easy swaps and why they are important to consider. I put together this guide to a non-toxic kitchen to get you started.

Buying organic produce and protein means nothing if our cookware and storage containers are loaded with harmful chemicals. Below I will be sharing my picks for non-toxic cookware and accessories that you will feel good about using.

Cookware Material To Avoid

Below are a couple materials that should be avoided when cooking. Knowing what to avoid when creating a non-toxic kitchen environement, is just as important as knowing what is safe.

Teflon

The chemicals in this material have been known to pollute the air when overheated. They come from a family of chemicals called PFOA’s, which are known to be linked to cancers, reproductive issues, and high cholesterol. As this material ages, it will begin to flake and chip allowing the residue to then enter This material contains chemicals that can pollute the air if overheated.

Although Teflon-coated cookware is no longer advertised, a new coating called GenX is being used, and studies have shown that it can be equally harmful to our bodies.our body through your food.

Aluminum

Many of us have used aluminum to line our pans or wrap our food while cooking, but research has shown that the metal in aluminum can seep into our food, especially when cooking with acidic foods. This has been linked to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Therefore, it is better to be safe than sorry and avoid using aluminum-based cooking materials and foil to prevent any potential harm.en with aluminum.

Cookware That Is Non-Toxic

Here are a few healthier options for cookware to consider. As you are doing your research, just be sure to look for cookware that is free of PFOAs, PTFEs, other PFAs, GenX chemicals (used on Teflon) toxic metals, and nanoparticles.

Ceramic

Ceramic cookware is a commonly used option in many households. Generally, it is considered safe to use. However, I suggest doing your own research to ensure it is free from PFOA’s. It is advisable to avoid high heat and only cook over low to medium heat to prevent damaging the pans.

There are a couple new brands that recently hit that market that I absolutely love and use in my own kitchen. Caraway and the Always Pan by Our Place.

GreenPan is another great option. While I do not currently have their cookware, I do own their slow cooker and rice maker.

Cast Iron

Cast iron has been around forever. Some say when cooking with it your food tastes better. That is because, over time, the flavors from foods become seasoned into the pan. They are nonstick so there is no coating of any kind. The key to cast iron is seasoning it before its first use and cleaning it properly after every use.

The key to seasoning is coating the entire area (including the handle) with an oil like olive oil or avocado oil. Spread with a paper towel and then place on a cookie sheet upside down. This will help catch any dripping oil. Bake in the oven at 375 degrees for 1-2 hours. Let it cool then it will be ready for its first use!

As for maintenance, do not use soap on cast iron and NEVER put it in the dishwasher. Simple use a non-abrasive sponge to remove any left on food.

Below are a few non-toxic brands that I own and highly recommend. I included affordable to a little higher price.

Glass

Glass is a fragile material, but it is an excellent non-toxic choice for cooking. Glass retains heat better than other cooking materials, making it a preferred choice for many dishes. Glass is also easy to clean up after cooking. It is important to coat the glass with oil or butter before adding ingredients to ensure that they don’t stick. Pyrex is a well-known brand of glass ovenware that is quite affordable. You can find a wide variety of Pyrex products on Amazon, as well as at your local Target and Walmart stores.

Glass is not only great for cooking, but also a wonderful food storage option. While plastic is easier on the wallet, it is one of the worst ways to store our leftovers. I switched over to glass food storage in 2021 and discuss more about it below.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a very durable metal used for cooking. High-quality stainless has zero toxins which means it will never react to ingredients used for cooking. It is also resistant to rust and staining. This makes the investment when purchasing stainless steel cookware as it is sure to have a long lifespan. Aside from its clean and sleek look, stainless steel is dishwasher-safe and easy to clean.

Some of the brands that make non-toxic stainless steel cookware are Heritage Steel, Caraway, Made In Cookware, and All-Clad.

Non-Toxic Cooking Utensils

Most people do not consider these guys when it comes to their effects on our health. They live in a drawer until we need them. I have never liked metal utensils as I have found they always ruin my cookware. And they are not all made with healthy materials.

Here are a few better alternatives to consider along with some of the brands I use.

Wood

Wooden utensils are very durable. However, they tend to be less resistant to heat. That would explain why I remember my mother’s wooden spoons always looked burned.

Silicone

These are non-stick options and can take on more heat than wood. Now a days they make a combination of both which are not only safe, durable but also stylish.

Non-Toxic Food Storage

When I was growing up the only food storage I knew was plastic. Plastic contains chemicals that will seep into your food, especially once heated.

Whether you put hot food in plastic containers or reheat leftovers in them, you are at risk because plastic retains the smell of the food over time.
