By now, most of us know how harmful off-the-shelf cleaners can be for our health, our home, and the environment. From respiratory problems to skin rashes, the harsh chemicals in products today can wreak havoc on our health over time. I promise that becoming more knowledgeable about our choices and taking the time to make some non-toxic cleaning product swaps will be worth it!

Below, I will discuss some ways using non-toxic cleaning products in your home can help improve your overall health and the environment in your home, affecting us all today and in the future.

The post below is all about non-toxic cleaning products

Do Natural Products Work?

YES!!! It is sometimes even better than the products we have become accustomed to. Some of our well-known household cleaning products strip our home of what we need to stay healthy. And they almost always leave behind residue.

On the other hand, natural non-toxic cleaning products do not strip our homes of what we need. There is no residue, and in many cases, they smell AMAZING!!

7 Reasons For Switching To Non-Toxic Cleaning Products:

1. Protects your health:

Did you know most of the cleaning products on the shelves today contain neurotoxins, endocrine disruptors, and carcinogens, which harm us more than we ever knew? Below, I will give you a list of some of the chemicals to avoid.

2. Makes your home a safer place:

In the ’90s, when I first had my own place, I thought the way to clean was bleach and ammonia. And I hate to admit it, but sometimes, especially in the bathroom, I would mix them! That is a DEADLY combination..

3. It helps you become more aware of what you are allowing into your home:

Taking the time to educate yourself on what is in your cleaning products is like knowing what you are putting into your mouth when you eat. We all have a choice. But sometimes, we do not understand how to make the right decisions.

4. You get to have fun making your products:

A more natural, non-toxic cleaning product is a great alternative, especially when starting. Making products at home can be a family affair! The kids can get involved, which teaches them the importance of understanding things that harm our health at an early age.

5. They don’t harm the environment:

Environmentally friendly products help reduce pollution and minimize harm to ecosystems. Choosing eco-friendly options supports sustainable practices, conserving resources for future generations.

6. They keep the air you breathe CLEAN:

Store-bought cleaning products contain loads of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are known to cause headaches and respiratory distress and have many other severe effects on our health. Non-toxic cleaning products are a better option.

7. Reduced Allergen Exposure:

Harsh chemicals in conventional cleaning products may trigger allergies or exacerbate existing sensitivities. Non-toxic alternatives typically contain hypoallergenic ingredients, reducing the risk of allergic reactions.

Ingredients Found In Cleaners To Avoid:

  • Phthalates – are better known and found on labels as “fragrance.” While anything that smells good makes us want to buy it, trust me there, unnatural smells are the cause of health consequences like headaches and rashes.
  • Chlorine – Found mostly in bathroom cleaners, laundry products, and tap drinking water. YUCK!
  • Triclosan – Found in dishwasher soaps and detergents
  • Quarternary Ammonium Compounds (QUATS) – On the label, this will say anti-bacterial on household cleaners and is found most frequently in fabric softeners.
  • Butoxyethanol – Found in almost all multi-purpose cleaners, including window cleaners.

How To Transition To Non-Toxic Cleaning Products:

There is no reason to run to the kitchen and throw everything away. Just slowly start replacing items with better, non-toxic cleaning products as you run out of things.

Some of the non-toxic cleaning products I use in my home that I have found to be VERY clean and effective are Branch Basics and Thieves Cleaner from Young Living. While both are excellent products, I LOVE Thieves Cleaner! Every time someone enters my home after I have used it on my counters, they ask what smells so wonderful! I have been using it for seven years! And have many of my family and friends using it in their homes as well.

Do your research and find a non-toxic cleaning product that works best for you and your family.

Add Essential Oils!

Essential oils provide a natural and pleasant fragrance to your cleaning products. Unlike synthetic fragrances found in many commercial cleaners, essential oils offer a fresh and clean scent without the use of potentially harmful chemicals. Many essential oils possess antimicrobial properties, helping to kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Common antimicrobial essential oils include tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender, and lemon. This can enhance the disinfecting power of your homemade cleaning solutions.

When using essential oils in homemade cleaning products, it’s important to be mindful of individual sensitivities and allergies. Additionally, proper dilution is crucial to avoid skin irritation or adverse reactions. Always follow recommended guidelines and recipes for incorporating essential oils into your cleaning solutions.
